St. Louis Restaurant Reviews:

The reviews of restaurants are published twice weekly in the St. Louis Post Dispatch; On Monday's in the Business section and and on Thursday's in the Get Out section. Patricia Corrigan was the official reviewer, and I was lucky enough to be able to tag along to give my "2 cents worth", until the Post changed their philosophy, and hired a new restaurant reviewer in October, 2001.Although I have no FAVORITE restaurant, there are several in St. Louis which deserve high praise. These include Gian-Pepe's on the Hill, The Crossing in Clayton, Trattoria Marcella near the Hill, Harvest Restaurant in Richmond Heights, Almond's in Clayton, Kemoll's downtown,Porter's in Collinsville, IL., F15teen in the downtown loft district, and Stoney River in Chesterfield.

I have found that a frequent problem with restaurants is the constant change in the industry. I am often asked about my favorite restaurants, only to find out that the chef has changed, the menu has changed, or the restaurant has even closed.

Having said that, I am always wary of voicing my favorite restaurant, or even my favorite food type.... but, with that disclaimer in mind, I do have a few favorites:

My favorite hamburger is from the Fatted Calf. My favorite "fried food" appetizer is Seamus McDaniels: fried mozarella. I no longer have a favorite pizza, as all of my old haunts have gone the way of the dinosaur. But, Dewey's Pizza has certainly become a taste treat. However, the new "gold standard" is Caito's. In addition, Frankie Tocco's in St. Charles is also excellent. My favorite steak is from Stoney River (plus Stoney River's bread is out of this world); although F15teen in the loft district is a very close second. My favorite Chinese restaurant is Asiana Garden , in University City. However, for a wonderful "Chinese" buffet, the Emporer's Palace in Chesterfield is terrific, as is Ryce's in Maryland Hts. My favorite Mexican restaurant is El Indio, with the best guacamole in the area.

As I travel the country, I like to stop in at "Mom & Pop" restaurants, rather than the generally blah-tasting food-chain restaurants. If you are near Kahoka, MO., I recommend Steve's Family Dining for perhaps the largest tenderloin sandwich ever (and superb flavor, too). If you are near Vienna, IL, off of I-24, I recommend Dollie's restaurant, for a wonderful fried catfish. And, if you are in Hannibal, MO., I suggest you stop in at Bubba's, for just about everything good. While in Chicago, I would urge you to have the Macho Salad at Bandera's on N. Michigan Ave. It was the most "awesome" salad I've ever had.

I am always open to new suggestions for where to go to eat. If you have a favorite place, or hear of a new place, please email and let me know.
